L.B. "Jeff" Jefferies is a fictional photographer and the main character from the 1954 mystery-thriller Rear Window. He was played by actor Jimmy Stewart.

Overview[]

L.B. "Jeff" Jefferies was a photojournalist, who suffered a broken leg during an incident at a racetrack. Confined to a wheelchair while he recuperated, he remained stuck inside his Greenwich Village apartment with his in-house nursing assistant, Stella, to attend him.

Left with little to do but to spy on his neighbors in the apartment across the street, Jefferies took note of a suspicious man named Lars Thorwald, whom he believed had murdered his wife. He contacted the police, but there was little they could do as there was no probable cause to look into Thorwald. Jefferies' girlfriend, Lisa Carol Fremont, became involved in the mystery as well, at great risk to herself.

After making things quite complicated for Thorwald, the so-called salesman decided to take matters into his own hand and finish Jefferies for good. He broke into his apartment and attacked the helpless photographer, throwing him out of the window of his building (thus breaking his other leg), before being captured by police. Though injured once again, Jefferies' accusations against Thorwald were validated as the man confessed to murdering his wife.
